The Book of Hebrews – (BST 407)

Welcome & Introduction

The Book of Hebrews was written to a group of dejected Messianic Jews. These were believers that had heard the gospel and committed their selves to Christ, only to have their lives upended as a result. Early on following their conversions they had been considered merely extremists by the Jewish community and just another sect of Judaism by the Roman government but by the time this epistle was written the Jewish community had determined these Christian Israelites were heretics determined to destroy the Law and the Covenant which had been long ago established by Moses. The Romans viewed these Christians as a threat to the Roman government establishing a “new” King and kingdom for themselves.

As a result, many of these converts were considering turning back to Judaism and renouncing Christ so they could regain their lives and abide in peace with their Jewish neighbors. The author of Hebrews understood their dilemma and the various trials these Christians were facing but also was aware of the cost of turning back to Judaism from Christ. In response to his concern for their salvation he compiled both the apostolic teachings and Old Testament scriptures to prove once and for all that Jesus was the Christ; theirs was a new and better Covenant, and their faith in him was not misguided. The purpose of this course is to give the student insights into some of the problems that often accompany conversion into the Christian religion, as well as pertinent arguments explaining the eternal benefits of surrendering a life to Christ.
