Paul’s Prison Epistles (BST 402, TH 404)

Welcome & Introduction

What Christian Scholars and students of the Bible commonly refer to as Paul’s Prison epistles are a series of letters written by Paul the apostle while he was on house arrest in Rome. Although he was not free to travel Paul felt the Holy Spirit was still using him to teach and guide the church and her leadership.

Paul’s forthrightness, honesty and his example of the love of Christ for all people endeared him to a wide variety of Roman officials who permitted him to live in his own rented house (although under guard), and receive visitors and guests freely. (Acts 28:16, 30, cf. Eph 6:20)

Paul lived in his rented house for two years before receiving his freedom. This allowed him to minister and proclaim the Word of God and God’s Kingdom to the Jews and gentiles alike that were living in Rome at that time.

Paul had other disciples with him, supporting him and aiding him in fulfilling his commission.

Luke, Timothy, Mark, Aristarchus, Epaphras, Joshua, Justus, Demas along with others were among those that accompanied him.

Although Paul was ministering successfully in Rome even while imprisoned, he understood his calling was greater than what he was accomplishing there, so he expanded the impact of his ministry through the following Epistles.
